So how long does it take to record a song? How long will we need in the studio?
For a band the time it takes to record a song depends on several factors. Generally if you all know the song like the back of your hand and can play it through without too many mistakes a band could record and mix a song in a day.
When recording we normally record drums first, then bass/guitars/keys, then vocals and any lead parts. The thing to bare in mind with this process is that each musician normally takes two or three takes untill they're happy that their part is right. Recording each musician separately increases the recording time of a song but allows us to obtain a "spill free" mix. If we put everyone in the same room with their amps etc drums might get picked up by the vocal mics, guitar may be heard on the bass. This makes it harder to mix the song in terms of getting the right sound for each musician.
You may find that you could record perhaps three or four songs in a day, but you then have to take in to consideration the time that each song is going to take to mix. Mixing is the process where we add effects such as reverbs, compression, gating etc. Mixing is the tweaking and fine tuning part of the recording process where we balance all the levels and get everything sounding how you want it to. To mix say four songs would probably take one day. So if you are looking to record a four track E.P it would be necessary to book two maybe three days.
